Toothsandblasting – is it worth it?

Are your teeth yellow? Or maybe they are covered with brown plaque? Are you thinking about whitening your teeth? First go to your dentist for a sandblasting treatment! Why? We’ll explain in this article.

Daily tooth brushing is not enough to effectively take care of your teeth. That’s why it’s a good idea to visit your dentist at least once a year for a full oral hygienization. Thanks to it your dentist will clean your teeth well from plaque and tartar deposited under the gums. The latter is one of the main causes of inflammation and periodontitis.

Periodontitis is not worth underestimating because it is the one that can lead to bleeding and pain with each brushing, and then to tooth loss. What is more, systematic hygienization prevents the development of carious bacteria, which live hidden in the plaque and the above mentioned calculus.

Professional hygienization includes scaling, which removes both tartar and subgingival calculus, and sandblasting, which is extremely effective in getting rid of stains and plaque. Especially the latter makes your teeth appear yellowed. The last stages of hygienization are polishing, thanks to which your teeth are thoroughly cleaned and polished, and fluoridation. The latter supports the mineralization of your teeth, as well as eliminates unpleasant sensitivity.

It is also worth knowing that if you plan to have your teeth whitened, it is important to undergo a hygienization procedure beforehand. Why? Because the whitening preparation will not penetrate the tooth, but only lighten the tartar. As a result, it will inaccurately and unevenly brighten the teeth. Moreover, sandblasting alone is already effective in improving the color of your teeth.

Does sandblasting damage enamel?

Some patients are reluctant to have their teeth sandblasted because they are concerned that it may contribute to the gradual wearing away of the enamel. It is worth knowing, however, that modern dental equipment does not destroy enamel. This is because the enamel is highly resistant to abrasion and the sandblasters used in the procedure do not cause its abrasion.

Of course some patients may experience slight hypersensitivity after the hygienization procedure and this is normal. Previously, the necks were covered with deposits and tartar, which, on the one hand, protected the tooth from external stimuli, and on the other hand, contributed to increased bacterial activity. After the procedure, the doctor usually performs fluoridation, which should prevent the occurrence of hypersensitivity.

What to keep in mind after the procedure?

It is a good idea to remember not to eat or drink anything for an hour after the procedure. This is mainly due to the fluoridation. To allow it to disappear deep into the tooth. Moreover, until the end of the day you should refrain from consuming colored foods and liquids such as coffee, strong tea, beets, red wine or berries. Your teeth could become discolored as a result of their consumption.
