Hair loss – what are the causes and how to deal with it?

Every one of us dreams of healthy, shiny hair. But what to do when you notice more and more individual hairs on your brush or pillow? How to deal with hair loss?

Hair loss is a problem, which affects many people of all genders and ages. As a rule, hair loss is unwanted and unwelcome – we dream of having thick, healthy and shiny hair, which looks well-groomed. While hair loss is a natural physiological process and we lose up to 150 hairs a day, excessive hair loss may be indicative of an unsuitable lifestyle or even health complications.

What influences hair loss?

It is said that women lose more hair than men. They are more likely to subject their hair to various styling methods, especially heat styling – we blow dry, straighten and curl it, some of us on a daily basis. Statistically, we also use more styling cosmetics, such as gels, mousses and sprays

Whether we wear our hair up or down, some hair falls out during sleep when it gets caught on a pillow and, if we have shoulder-length hair, it often gets caught in clothes and jewelry or crushed by the strap of a bag

Inadequate styling and care undoubtedly have a negative effect on the condition of our hair and make it fall out. To avoid this, we must remember a few ironclad rules. When blow-drying your hair, hold the dryer at an appropriate distance, preferably with an upright arm. Don’t rub your hair with a towel to dry it – just squeeze the excess water out. Don’t wet comb your hair either, as this will weaken it and break it.

But what are the other causes of excessive hair loss, when we lose more than the “prescribed” 150 hairs a day? You should pay attention to your health. Hair loss is often a sign of various ailments and diseases

Hormonal changes, for example, in people who have recently given birth or during the menopause are common problems accompanying hair loss. Hair loss is also associated with scalp diseases such as ringworm, anaemia, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and infections.

We should also remember that our diet – especially if it is low in calories and vitamins and minerals – as well as stress and mood swings and taking some permanent medications – especially contraceptives or cardiac medications – have an influence on hair loss.

How to deal with hair loss?

There are several home remedies to strengthen hair, such as castor oil mask, which will further nourish and regenerate hair. Various herbal preparations such as nettle and field horsetail infusions also work well. Massaging the scalp is also a good habit as it stimulates hair bulbs to work, which speeds up the hair growth process.

However, if we consider that our hair falls out in too large a quantity, it will be worth visiting a family doctor, who will give us a referral to a specialist (dermatologist, trichologist) for further consultation, diagnosis and possible treatment.
