Laser therapy – what should you know about it?

Laser therapy is one of the most commonly used methods in cosmetology and aesthetic medicine. What is its secret? First of all it is extremely effective and universal. It is used to cope with various diseases and to treat pain. In aesthetic medicine it is used in anti-aging treatments. Lasers are used to remove excessive hair and unwanted tattoos, and even to treat acne and blemishes after eczema.

How does laser therapy work?

Laser therapy is a bloodless method of treating various diseases and improving one’s own beauty. Widely used in aesthetic medicine, so thanks to it, completely non-invasive surgical procedures can be performed. The benefits of using a laser are very large. Many procedures can be performed in a few hours, and the patient does not have to worry about the time of wound healing or later removal of stitches. Laser therapy involves emitting a beam of light (of a fixed power and length) to a selected part of the body for a specified period of time. Everything depends on the type of treatment and how it works. Lasers can emit radiation in a continuous or pulsed manner

How does a laser work?

Few people know that the word laser is an acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. Laser emits radiation of different wavelengths. It occurs in the range of visible light, infrared and ultraviolet. For this reason, devices are divided into low-energy (1-6 mW), medium-energy (1-500 mW) and high-energy (above 500 mW). Low-energy lasers are usually used in physiotherapy, they have a biostimulative effect, and high-energy lasers are used in aesthetic medicine and surgery, because in the treatments there is a break in the continuity of the skin tissues. They are a great tool for closing blood vessels. Moreover, lasers are divided by the types of element that produces laser radiation. These are:

  • solid-state lasers
  • gas lasers
  • liquid lasers
  • crystal lasers (e.g. ruby lasers);
  • lasers with a special organic dye (dye laser)

Operation of low-energy lasers

These lasers emit a beam of the lowest power, which has a biostimulative effect on body cells. The energy of low-power device affects the shrinkage of collagen and elastin fibers, as well as enhances their synthesis. Collagen produced by low-power laser is much more durable, resistant to mechanical damage and the adverse effects of UV radiation. Biostimulative action relieves inflammation in the body, accelerates healing, and sometimes has an analgesic effect, but only in case of minor injuries. In addition, laser irradiation affects microcirculation, blood flows faster, equipping cells with oxygen. Devices used in biostimulation are helium-neon and solid-state lasers

Action of high-energy lasers

High-powered lasers interfere with body tissues. They are typically used in aesthetic medicine to remove tattoos, skin blemishes and stretch marks. The light emitted by the laser affects the hair bulb, which absorbs it and the proteins of which it is composed are thermally damaged. As a result, both excessive hair and unsightly skin lesions can be removed. In a similar way dilated capillaries or discoloration are removed. In order for the treatment to give the right results, it should be performed several times. It does not end with her visit to the aesthetic medicine office

Contraindications for the use of laser

Laser therapy can not be used by people who suffer from cancer, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, epilepsy or are simply sick (it can be a bacterial, fungal or viral infection). Laser therapy is not recommended to people who are prone to severe skin lesions (mainly allergic) and pregnant or breastfeeding women
